Understanding how invisible chemicals affect

our metabolism

Everyday products may contain substances that interfere with our metabolism (the way our body uses energy, controls blood sugar, and manages fat storage). NEMESIS explores how these endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) impact our health, and what we can do to reduce exposure to these chemicals.

Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are substances that may be found in our environment, food, and consumer products that can interfere also with how our body manages energy and fat.

Over time, this can contribute to diseases like fatty liver disease, obesity, or type 2 diabetes.

We are all exposed to these chemicals in our daily lives: in the air we breathe, the food we eat, or the products we use.

Most exposures are very low, but long-term contact can affect how our metabolism works.

By understanding where these chemicals are and how they act, we can take steps to prevent exposure and protect our health.

Although endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) can affect anyone, some groups are more vulnerable

  • Pregnant women
  • Babies and young children
  • People living with long-term metabolic conditions, such diabetes or cardiovascular disease

You can reduce your exposure to EDCs by making small, everyday choices:

NEMESIS is a European research project funded by the European Union

Our scientists are studying how EDCs act in the body, using advanced data and biological research.

The goal is to support better policies, safer products, and enhance the public health of the EU citizens and beyond

How can policy help?
